The next time you’re driving through Hillsboro, you may notice a few new street signs and welcome signs. The Town Council of Hillsboro voted in the fall of 2007 to purchase street signs once the official names of all the town’s streets were determined. The street signs were erected with the help of the Odd Fellows in June 2009. In addition, the Pearl Buck Birthplace and the Town of Hillsboro worked together to purchase the materials and build the “Welcome to Hillsboro” signs located near the Birthplace of Pearl Buck on the northern side of town and near the old Bartholomew home on the south side of Hillsboro. These were constructed in October 2009. The Odd Fellows also provided labor. Plans for additional monies, that will be used to purchase building materials to erect flower areas under each sign, have also been made.

In addition to the signs, the council approved construction of a town website. Launched in November 2008, the site features various information about the town’s history, churches, library, school, and local attractions. Businesses that serve Hillsboro also have the option of purchasing advertising space on the site or becoming part of the business directory for nominal affordable fees. A new feature of the site is “Hillsboro News”. Here, the council will post web news articles about the town’s happenings, businesses and groups on a quarterly basis. In addition, the monthly minutes are posted for public viewing. The site can be viewed at www.hillsborowv.com. If you are a business serving Hillsboro and wish to advertise on the site, please send an inquiry from the site that includes your email address and an application will be emailed to you. Please call the town office at 304-653-4005 to have one mailed out to you.

The council also has participated in the governor’s wv.gov project, where every municipality in West Virginia has a website featuring information about that particular town. Nancy Martin, PCHS teacher, worked with the council to collect information, develop the site, and to publish it. The URL for this site is www.hillsboro.wv.gov .

Lastly, citizens and visitors can now find the Town of Hillsboro on Facebook. The facebook page will be used to inform “fans” of changes to the website, council meetings and town happenings. To find the page, search for Town of Hillsboro on Facebook.
